To investigate the effect of innovative psychotherapy workshops based on self-concept and autobiographical memory on alcohol addiction among patients with alcohol use disorder.
In 2015, an estimated 41,000 deaths in France were attributed to alcohol consumption, accounting for 7% of deaths among people aged 15 and older and representing the second leading cause of preventable mortality (Bonaldi & Hill, 2019). The primary victims are patients with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD). Managing this chronic and complex condition requires consideration of numerous biological, psychological, and social factors. In this context, one of the factors highlighted in understanding alcohol consumption behavior is the Alcohol-Related Self-Concept (ARSC; Lindgren et al., 2017). A recent meta-analysis has shown that the ARSC is a robust predictor of alcohol consumption behavior and associated problems (Montes & Pearson, 2021). However, studies in the field of autobiographical memory have shown that it underlies the construction of the self-concept. Indeed, this form of memory stores all the information and memories specific to an individual accumulated since childhood, which enable them to construct a sense of identity and temporal continuity. According to the model proposed by Conway and Pleydell-Pearce (2000), autobiographical memories serve as the building blocks that help individuals construct a coherent self-image and update their self-concept. However, data from the literature have shown that AM is particularly impaired in patients with ALD (Cuervo-Lombard et al. 2016; Nandrino & Gandolphe, 2017). In line with the concepts of Nandrino, Gandolphe & El Haj (2017), we hypothesize that autobiographical memory could serve as a therapeutic lever toward the CSA.
