This survey device was proven to be necessary following OVE missions for several reasons: The lifestyles of students are very different from one another, and the development of higher learning tends to accentuate diversity and to increase differences. The statistical survey by questionnaire, representative of the entire student population, allows for the making of an inventory of this diversity and to give a complete description. In order to clarify the relationships between lifestyles and curricula, it must combine observation of all major aspects of material life (resources, housing, etc.), the structure of time usage, organisation and the course of study (type of degree obtained, academic and social situation over the course of the year prior to the survey, etc.). In order to monitor the evolution of living conditions and paths, this survey must be repeated regularly. Lastly, in order to allow for the comparison between European countries, the CdV [Living Conditions] survey is recorded in the Eurostudent programme for European comparative data.
