There are multiple purposes of the survey: Firstly, ESPS (health and social protection survey) makes it possible to study the existing links on an individual level between the state of health, access to health services, access to public and private insurance and the socio-economic status. This makes it possible to conduct many analyses covering equity in the health system and to enlighten public efforts by participating in the evaluation of public policies, whether directly or indirectly linked to health. ESPS is as such a reactive tool for researchers in the social sciences, making it possible to test new research hypotheses on French data. ESPS is also an information tool for public health. It makes it possible to assess in an exploratory manner the prevalences of affections in the absence of specific instruments and complete sources, and this using detailed data on morbidity. ESPS thus comprises a unique source of data on supplemental health insurance in France. Through its specific questioning pertaining to the supplemental contracts that the members of the households surveyed benefit from, it offers a panorama of the contracts that are actually in effect and as such of the distribution and of the changes in the levels of coverage in the population.
