Objectives of the registry in terms of public health (surveillance, evaluation): The registry was created within the framework of the measure of the Cancer Plan 2003-2007 (Prevention action line, measure aimed at improving coverage of the population through general registries thanks to the creation of three new urban registries (Nord, Aquitaine, Ile de France). This therefore entailed firstly to improve the epidemiological monitoring system that already exists in France. Moreover, three specialized registries already existed in the départment of Gironde: Aquitain registry on pleural mesothelioma (included in the multi-center registry on a national level for pleural mesothelioma), Girondin registry of primitive tumors of the central nervous system and Girondin registry of hematological malignancies. This also entailed improving the monitoring system for cancers in one département where there were in particular many activities linked to wine growing (exposure to pesticides) and forestry (exposure to wood dust), and a nuclear industry (Blayais nuclear production center). The purpose of these cancer monitoring systems is to estimate the incidence, prevalence and survival on a départemental, regional, national and international level, making it possible to study how they change over time and a comparison between geographical entities. The registry also has for purpose to contribute to the evaluation of health programs, especially concerning organized screening actions, in progress (breast and colon-rectum cancers) and those to come, through monitoring the rates of incidence and estimating the proportion of false negatives and interval cancers. Moreover, its objective is also to participate in evaluating the professional practices in terms of caring for cancer. Objectives of the registry in terms of research: The purpose of the registry is to participate in studies concerning in particular etiologic epidemiology, especially pertaining to cancers of which a professional or environmental origin are suspected.
